Socialism
(Michelle D.) Who: French Utopian Socialism
Marxist Socialism
Key Beliefs: French Utopian Socialism-
Simon called for parasites (court, aristocracy, lawyers, and churches) to give way to the doers (scientists, engineers, industrialists). Fourier advocated the emancipation of women and the abolition of marriage. Blanc believed that the government should instate workshops and factories for full employment (Organization of Work). Proudhon feared the state’s power and argued that property was simply profit that was stolen from the worker. Marxist Socialism- The middle-class Bourgeoisie and lower-class Proletariat always had opposing interests, the latter of which would, as Marx predicted, eventually revolt. Combined sociology, economics, and history in its ideology Marx was a supporter of ideas similar to Fourier in regards to women and family. Concerns:
Other Groups: Nationalists- Although socialism in theory would unite people, for the most part, Nationalists would not support socialists. However, the Soviet Union, one could argue, did propose both nationalism and socialism, although the degree to which Russia was socialist (instead of a dictatorship) could be debated. Classical Liberals- Liberals advocated representative government and equal economic opportunity. They were not very fond of the socialists. Conservatives- Heavily anti-socialist, the conservatives wished to keep class-structure as it was with a strong power at the head. |
